Welcome to the Netherlands and Amsterdam

‘Holland Classics’ is the traditional market segment with the Dutch symbols, such as tulips, wooden shoes, windmills and cheese. It also includes the cultural 17th-century heritage with Holland's famous masters Vermeer and Rembrandt, as well as Van Gogh, the Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken, etc. In cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Maastricht, as well as other cities, people can find urban life in all its aspects, including the trendy elements, design & architecture, cozy bars and pubs, visiting museums, sightseeing and shopping. Besides the interesting cities, Holland embraces ‘enjoying the good life in rural surroundings’. The Dutch ‘coast’ remains also an attractive area. The strengths of the coastal area are its natural beaches with the dunes and the attractive hinterland with its cities. Many people combine a visit to the coast with visits to amusement parks and/or museums.

Amsterdam's appeal lies in its rich cultural heritage, diverse & creative culture, commercial dynamism and high quality of life. Ultimately, the city's strongest asset is its people: the people who live here, the people who work here, the people who study here, and the people who visit here.

Active Population

The interest of the Dutch people and politician in sports and exercise has strongly increased in the last few years. Sports and exercise are activities that many people enjoy doing, they have important social functions and positively contribute to the public health. Many research on sports, exercise and health are accomplished, and many are still going. In Holland, about 2/3 of all residents practices some kind of sport. Football is the greatest sports association, followed by tennis, golf and gymnastics.

Amsterdam is an active city, where the majority of the population lead a healthy lifestyle, regularly incorporate activity into their daily lives. Whatever time of the year, one will always find ‘Amsterdammers’ engaging in numerous activities. There is an underlying belief that sport and exercise are key assets in living a healthy, happy life and the city's population takes advantage of this regularity.

Even in the midst of wintertime, Amsterdammers are traditionally drawn to skating halls, the public rinks on the Museum and Dam squares, or even the odd frozen canal in a lucky winter of sub-zero temperatures.

In milder months, these skates turn to wheels as hundreds of free-wheelers can be seen zooming around the city streets and parks on in-line skates – which some claim are a cousin to the wooden-spools-on-shoes invented by a Dutchman in the early 1700’s.

In the summer months you see Amsterdammers visit to the nearby beaches and lakes, and even the canals, to set sail. All year round, iAmsterdammers are going to gyms, sport centers, swimming pools and other centers to participate in everything from aerobics to pilates to yoga. And of course, there is the bicycle: they consider their bicycles as a primary means of transportation for everything from themeselves to their babies, their briefcases, their groceries and even their furniture!

  • Almost 2/3 of the city’s population participate in sports activities
