Thursday September 17: Sport in cities and communities: sport events and the city
On day 1 the focus will be on the place of sport in the city, and more specifically, what is the place of major sporting events in the context of developing, promoting, selling, changing, or even repositioning communities and cities. After an opening keynote session in which the conference theme will be outlined and conceptually founded, the morning keynote sessions includes a presentation by the Secretary General of the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, and other (potential) Olympic Games organisers will set the scene for the remainder of the conference. From the past, current and future issues that organisers of the world's biggest sporting event have to deal with we can glean the impact that some of these issues may have on (potential) host cities. On this first day the issues of lobbying, bidding, the social impact and performance management will be debated in the professional practice workshops. One of the academic workshops will deal with talent identification issues in professional (English) football and the European Sport Management Quarterly will host a sport and culture workshop. The day's closing keynotes are representatives from three cities: Melbourne in Australia as a past organiser of Olympic Games and currently the number one sporting event city in the world; Madrid as a possible future organiser of Olympic Games and home to the richest football team in the world; and Amsterdam as your conference host city, home to four time Champions League champions Ajax FC and past and possible future organiser of the Olympic Games.

About the different components of the conference program
The EASM 2009 conference program in Amsterdam has been designed in a way that both sport management academics and sport management practitioners can get maximum value from the sessions that they chose to attend. Every conference day starts and finishes with keynote sessions delivered to all conference participants - some by leading researchers and some by leading managers. Amongst others we are proud to present to you the Secretary General of the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Mr Wang Wei; the Vice President of NBC Sport and IOC member for Israel, Mr Alex Gilady; and the Chief Operating Officer for UEFA's Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 tournaments, Mr Martin Kallen. On day one the keynotes will focus on sport events and the city; on day two on sport facility and venue management; and on day three on sport business and major events.
- Scientific program
- Academic workshops
- Professional practice workshops
Next to the keynote sessions the remainder of the program consists of regular parallel sessions in which three categories of papers are presented: research/working papers, professional practice papers, and papers by early career researchers. This part of the program is listed as the scientific program. This program starts after morning coffee, is intermitted by lunch, and finish before afternoon coffee.
The conference organisers have also catered for more interactive sessions in which there is an opportunity to deal with a certain topic or issue in a more detailed and analytical way. To this end a number of academic workshops have been scheduled. During these sessions that last a maximum of two hours, a number of presenters will briefly introduce you to the specific subject matter at hand before the workshop chair will lead the session into a dialogue and discussion with the audience. The workshops start after morning coffee, are intermitted by lunch, and finish before afternoon coffee.
Each day of the Amsterdam 2009 EASM Conference will feature three parallel nearly four hour Professional practice workshops chaired by a leading sport management professional or academic. Each workshop has a theme, which will be addressed by 3 to 4 well known experts in their field. The short presentations are follewed by discussion and debate. The presenters have been invited to put forward the pressing issues, current research findings and trends and inset their expert opinions. The central theme of the workshops in Amsterdam is “The Olympic Plan” as the Netherlands is investigating the requirements for a successful bid for the Olympic Games in 2028. Several aspects of bidding, planning, organizing, execution and evaluation of sports events will be brought forward. Some of the key note speakers will also contribute during the workshop discussions. The workshops start after morning coffee, are intermitted by lunch, and finish before afternoon coffee.
